WI Senate Race

Here in Wisconsin we have a race for a U.S. Senate seat.

On one side we have a popular ex-governor, Tommy Thompson.

On the other side we have a woman notable only for being the first lesbian elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Tammy Baldwin.  She represents the city of Madison, "where logic goes to die."

I've been seeing endless ads for Tammy.  The ads consist entirely of pointing out that she's in favor of abortion and gay marriage and Tommy is not.

My question is: who is she trying to appeal to with these ads?  The people who already support her?  Is she as out of touch with the rest of Wisconsin as she seems to be?

About the only place in the state that would put abortion and gay marriage as the top priorities is Madison (her district).  When she was nominated we heard that she has no idea about what the rest of the state is like.  That sure seems to be the case.
